There’s something special about photographing a couple who genuinely enjoys being around each other.

Not because they know exactly how to pose. Not because they’re constantly laughing or putting on a show for the camera. But because when you step back and watch them, you can see that they simply like doing life together.

That’s exactly what I saw during Jordan and Joey’s couples photography session in Albany, Indiana.

And honestly? I walked away from this session feeling incredibly fulfilled.

An Ice Cream Date at Dairy Dream

For this Indiana couples photography session, we headed to Dairy Dream in Albany, Indiana, a small, locally owned ice cream shop that made the perfect backdrop for an evening together.

Jordan and Joey grabbed a vanilla and chocolate swirl cone, and we let the session unfold from there.

But there was something else that made this evening special: this was a date night for Mom and Dad.

Jordan and Joey have three children, one biological child and two adopted children, so getting a little time away together isn’t necessarily an everyday occurrence.

Sometimes you don’t need an elaborate date night.

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house, grab an ice cream, hold hands, laugh together, and remember that you’re a couple underneath all the busyness of being parents.

And that’s exactly what this session felt like.

Instead of spending the entire evening standing in one spot and looking at the camera, we treated it like a real date. We walked around, played, laughed, ate ice cream, and let them interact naturally.

And yes, the ice cream was just as delicious as it looked. 😂🍦

This is one of my favorite things about couples photography. I don’t want your photos to feel like you’re spending an hour being told where to put your hands and how to smile.

I want you to actually have fun together.

Some of my favorite photographs happen in the moments between the poses: the little laughs, the way you look at each other, the ice cream melting down the cone, and all the things you weren’t expecting to happen.

But Jordan & Joey Are More Than Just a Pretty Couple

What made this session especially meaningful to me wasn’t just how much fun we had.

It was getting to know the people behind the photographs.

Jordan and Joey are both incredibly service-minded people who spend their days helping others.

Joey works with a local food bank, helping provide meals and resources to people in need while also doing a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that makes that service possible. From helping people access food to working on grants and other resources, his work goes far beyond simply handing someone a meal.

Jordan works as a social worker serving homeless veterans. She helps connect veterans with housing and other resources and supports them as they navigate physical and mental health needs. Link to work with Jordan

And on top of that, Jordan also works as a metabolic health life coach, helping others pursue healthier lives. Her own personal health journey has also shaped her passion for helping others.

Two people. Three kids. Busy lives. And so much of what they do revolves around serving other people.

They’re truly doing the Lord’s work.

The Kind of Couples I Love Photographing

This session made me stop and think about something I’ve been realizing more and more as a photographer:

The couples I feel most fulfilled photographing aren’t necessarily the couples who are the loudest or the most outgoing.

They’re the couples who are kind.

The couples who genuinely enjoy one another.

The couples who don’t take themselves too seriously.

The couples who have a deep love for one another and a desire to use their lives to serve others.

The couples who want photographs that feel like them, rather than photographs that simply look good on Instagram.

That’s what I loved about Jordan and Joey.

Jordan has just enough personality to keep you laughing, while Joey is a little quieter and more reserved. But both of them were kind, genuine, and completely willing to have fun with the experience.

And that made photographing them feel easy.

Your Session Should Feel Like You

Maybe you’re newly engaged and dreaming about your wedding day.

Maybe you’re already married and realizing you haven’t had professional photos taken together since your wedding.

Maybe you’re raising little ones and desperately need an excuse to get out of the house for an hour and remember what it feels like to be just the two of you.

Your couples photos don’t have to be stiff or overly posed.

They can be playful.

They can be quiet.

They can be messy.

They can be romantic.

They can look like the two of you simply spending time together.

Maybe that means getting ice cream at your favorite local shop. Maybe it’s grabbing coffee, walking around your favorite part of town, or doing something that feels completely ordinary to everyone else but means something to you.

Because those are the photographs you’ll look back on and remember how it actually felt to be together.
